Health Insurance Supplementary Coverage: Tailored Insurance Protection

The basic health insurance in Switzerland already covers many medical expenses in case of illness, accidents, and maternity. However, additional costs often arise for dental treatments, alternative therapies, or visual aids. The same applies if you wish for more comfort during a hospital stay. With supplementary health insurance, you can cover these additional costs and also benefit from services that are not covered by mandatory health insurance.

Health insurance providers individually determine which additional services they offer. Therefore, there are significant differences between the various providers in terms of offered services and premiums. A comparison before concluding a supplementary insurance is therefore advisable.

Which Outpatient Supplementary Insurances Are Worth It?

Which outpatient supplementary insurances really make sense? This mainly depends on your life situation and individual requirements. For example, if you need visual aids, a glasses supplementary insurance might be useful, covering significant costs for glasses, contact lenses, and possibly even for laser eye treatments. If you want to complement conventional medicine with alternative healing methods, there are also specific supplementary insurances for this area. Other additional benefits could include coverage of costs for non-prescription drugs, rescue and transport services, treatments abroad, and health-promoting measures.

An additional dental insurance is also recommended, covering part of the costs for dental treatments, corrections of dental misalignments, and jaw surgery up to a set annual limit.

Additional Hospital Insurance

Nearly 50% of the Swiss population have opted for supplementary insurance for hospital stays. The standard hospital insurance allows you, for example, to be treated in a hospital outside your own canton without additional costs. Moreover, there is the option to conclude a semi-private or a fully private hospital supplementary insurance. With the semi-private option, you are entitled to accommodation in a semi-private area and a room with two beds. If you choose the fully private insurance, you have the option of being accommodated in a single room.

What Should You Consider When Concluding Supplementary Insurance?

The basic insurance is based on the provisions of the Federal Law on Health Insurance (KVG). In contrast, supplementary insurances follow the Insurance Contract Act (VVG). Unlike the KVG, the VVG does not have an unrestricted obligation to accept. This means that a health insurance company can reject you for supplementary insurance. Some health insurance companies require a health check before concluding supplementary insurance.

The contributions for the supplementary insurance are based on the individual insurance risk as well as the age and gender of the insured.

Another difference between basic and supplementary insurance: After an insured event, the health insurance company can terminate the supplementary insurance.

Find Suitable Supplementary Insurances with the Supplementary Insurance Comparison

Many insurance companies offer their additional outpatient services in the form of packages. These package offers seem convenient and are often cheaper than individual offers. However, they only cover many costs up to a certain annual limit. It is also possible that they include services that you do not really need. To find the most suitable supplementary insurance for your requirements, a comparison of supplementary insurances is worthwhile.
