Compulsory basic insurance in Switzerland

The Swiss Health Insurance Law (LHI) mandates that everyone must have compulsory health insurance. Individuals moving to Switzerland need to select a health insurance provider within three months of their arrival. The choice of insurer is up to you, provided it operates within your canton of residence.

The basic insurance covers essential medical services in case of illness. In situations of health issues, accidents, or maternity, the health insurance takes care of the costs for necessary treatments and medications. Policyholders initially cover the costs themselves, and later get reimbursed by their health insurance for the covered services.

Same performance, different premiums

The LHI (Swiss Health Insurance Law) specifies the services covered by the basic insurance. However, each health insurance company independently determines its own premiums. The amount of these contributions varies based on several criteria, including the canton, premium region, age, income, and marital status.

Every autumn, health insurance companies set the premiums for the upcoming year. These premiums must be approved by the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH), which releases the updated rates no later than September 24th. At the beginning of 2025, health insurance premiums once again experienced an increase. On average, each policyholder is seeing a rise of 1.2 percent for the standard premium.

For the upcoming year, another increase in premiums is anticipated. Your health insurance must inform you of the revised contribution amount by the end of October. This is the prime time to compare health insurance offers and consider switching to a more affordable provider. By shifting to a more cost-effective health insurer, you could save several hundred or even a thousand Swiss Francs, all while maintaining the same benefits.

If your health insurance announces a premium hike, you have the option to terminate the contract by November 30th of the current year. The cancellation will take effect on December 31st, and your new health insurance contract will commence on January 1st. With our health insurance comparison tool, you can determine if a switch is beneficial for you.
