How to Easily Switch Your Health Insurance

When the monthly premiums of an insurer increase, many policyholders think about switching health insurances. Such a switch can bring annual savings of several hundred to a thousand Swiss Francs. However, the conditions for switching basic insurance differ from those of supplementary insurance. If you are considering changing your health insurance, here are important tips on how to proceed.

Switching Health Insurance: How to Proceed

Every autumn, the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) sets the premiums for health insurances for the following year. By October 31st at the latest, health insurances are obligated to inform their members in writing about the updated monthly contributions. After receiving this letter, you have the opportunity to change your basic insurance by the end of the year.

Before making a switch, it's recommended to compare offers from various health insurances. This way, you can find the provider that best suits your needs and is the most cost-effective. During this comparison, also consider whether switching to a different insurance model could be advantageous. Further savings can be achieved by choosing a higher annual deductible.

After the insurance comparison, you should request offers from one or more health insurances. The selected insurers will send you these offers. Choose the best offer for you and register with the new health insurance using the accompanying form.

Don't forget to cancel your current health insurance. Be sure to observe the respective cancellation deadlines.

Switching Health Insurance: By When Do You Need to Cancel Your Basic Insurance?

If you wish to switch your health insurance due to an announced premium increase, this is possible at the end of the year. For the cancellation of basic insurance, the cancellation letter must have arrived at the insurance company by November 30th at the latest. The actual receipt of the letter by the insurance, not the date of the postmark, counts. The cancellation then becomes effective on December 31st.

If your health insurance increases the premium in the middle of the year, they must inform you by the end of April. You then have until May 31st to dissolve your current insurance and can switch to another provider from July 1st.

Switching Health Insurances: Deadline for Basic Insurances with Regular Deductible

If you have a basic insurance with a monthly standard deductible of 300 Francs, there is an additional date for contract cancellation in the middle of the year. Your cancellation will then become effective on June 30th. There is a three-month cancellation period, which means your cancellation letter must have arrived at the health insurance by March 31st at the latest.

Switching Health Insurance: Deadline for Cancelling Supplementary Insurance

You can change basic insurance and supplementary insurance separately from each other. This means you can stay with your existing basic insurance and only conclude supplementary insurance with another provider. Each health insurance determines the cancellation deadlines for supplementary insurance individually. It is therefore advisable to read the insurance conditions carefully and adhere to the specified cancellation date.

If your insurance provider increases the premium of the supplementary insurance, you have the right to cancel with a one-month notice and switch to another provider.
