Accident Coverage Through Health Insurance

In Switzerland, all residents are mandatorily required to have accident insurance. Employees are covered under the Accident Insurance Act (UVG). Those not in an employment relationship receive accident protection through their health insurance.

Accident Coverage in Mandatory Basic Insurance

The Swiss Accident Insurance Act (UVG) ensures that anyone who is not employed or does not receive benefits from unemployment insurance is automatically insured against accidents through their health insurance. This applies to children, homemakers, self-employed individuals, and students.

In the event of an accident, the basic insurance according to the Health Insurance Act (KVG) covers medical services, medications, and room and board in the general hospital area. For accidents abroad, costs are covered up to twice the value of treatment in Switzerland.

The cost participation for accident protection includes an annual deductible and a co-payment of 10%, up to a maximum of 700 CHF for adults and 350 CHF for children.

Employer's Accident Insurance

For employees, taking out basic insurance without accident coverage can lead to premium savings of up to ten percent. Employees already enjoy accident protection through their employer, covering the insurance premiums.

The accident insurance under the Accident Insurance Act (UVG) is not limited to work accidents but also applies to accidents at home or during leisure time. Part-time employees working less than eight hours per week for an employer are only insured against occupational accidents and occupational diseases.

After the termination of an employment relationship, accident protection continues for one more month and can be extended for six months by applying for a continuation insurance with SUVA. If the UVG protection expires, it's important to inform the health insurance company to avoid insurance gaps. Failure to notify may secure services according to KVG, but outstanding premiums must be paid.

Supplemental Insurance with Accident Coverage

Opting for an accident supplemental insurance enhances the scope of your statutory coverage by including services like alternative treatment methods and psychotherapeutic care without medical referral. Additionally, it enables preferred accommodation in hospitals, whether in semi-private or private rooms. The decision for such supplemental insurance should be made based on the existing accident insurance through the employer and its range of services.
